Susan was lying next to me, motionless except for the rhythmic rising
and falling of her chest. I looked at the clock; it glowed "3:17" in
green neon lights.
I got out of bed to go to the bathroom. I figured a splash of cold
water would calm my nerves. After closing the door, I fumbled around,
and managed to find the light switch. The neon light flickered a little
until my eyes adjusted and I could see the whole room.
The cabinet was open, and it's contents throw across the shelves and
into the sink. I tried to figure out the reason behind this mess.
"John?"
I turned round. A tall man with a dark leather jacket and gelled-back
hair sat in the corner on top of the toilet seat cover. He stood up and
walked towards me; his black Italian leather shoes making a quiet
click-clack sound against the floor.
"You're lucky you know. If Susan hadn't been there to fix that up for
you, you'd be dead by now."
I looked down at my chest, and saw bandages strapped across it, with
blood stains peppering the white cloth.
"I came as soon as I could, and have been in here for the last few
hours to see if he would come back."
The dull pain in my chest, and the memories of the last 24 hours began
to send clear signals to my head. I was indeed lucky to be alive.
